Jonathan Green (born 1955) is an acclaimed contemporary artist whose work is deeply influenced by his roots in the Gullah community of Gardens Corner, located near the South Carolina Sea Islands. The word “Gullah” refers to both a people and the language they speak- a Creole dialect with a base in English and elements from many different West African languages. Because of the particular history of the region, the Gullah people have been able to preserve an unusual amount of their African cultural heritage, even through their ancestors’ enslavement and eventual freedom. Green’s paintings celebrate Gullah culture by showing gorgeous, colorful scenes from everyday life on the South Carolina coast. Green’s work is now in the permanent collection of many prominent museums, including the Morris Museum (Augusta, Georgia), the Afro-American Museum of Philadelphia, the Naples Museum of Art (Naples, Florida), and the IFCC Cultural Center (Portland, Oregon).
