In 1503, Da Vinci was commissioned to paint a portrait of the noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy silk merchant, to celebrate the birth of her second child. The Italian name of the painting,La Gioconda, is a pun on the subject's name that also means "the happy one".
